“Smart Metering” – Chain1

METERS AND MORE technology represents a complete solution for Smart Metering. It is an evolution of the Enel Telegestore system that has been working in Italy on millions of smart meters for more than ten years Meters and More is the solution chosen by Endesa for its smar metering project with a total of 13 million meters installed by 2018.

Benefits and References

The main criteria that have led the development of METERS AND MORE technology are efficiency, robustness and security of communications. These are ensured by the following functionalities:

  • very short message exchanges, optimized for narrowband powerline and wireless communications;
  • use of a BPSK modulation that allows the communication to reach a coded bit-rate of 4800 bps;
  • Robust solution, suitable for economic implementation, low-consumption and high reachability;
  • optimization of communication paths;
  • support to a high level of encryption and authentication, by the use of 128 bits AES algorithm;
  • automatic network configuration and management;
  • retransmission management.

“More than Metering” – Chain2

Meters and More’s goal is to not only provide an interoperable end-to-end solution for smart metering, but also to develop extensions for complementary value-added services based on the same principles of openness, interoperability, efficiency, robustness and security of communications.

To making consumption data available in ‘near real time’ to the end customer, the technical committees of Meters and More are engaged in opening new interesting prospects for going beyond metering, presenting recently to the market the first prototype of the METERS AND MORE smart energy gateway.

The Gateway is based on an extension to the existing protocol for communication between the smart meter and in-home devices, that enables the interchange of energy consumption information as well as enabling the inclusion of new services.  The gateway can connect with other smart devices in the house using other standard and widespread communication technologies such as Wi-Fi, ZigBee, Bluetooth, etc.  The smart energy gateway is a key element of the METERS AND MORE “Beyond the Meter” programme, aimed at accelerating smart energy and IoT benefits for consumers in accordance with European Commission recommendations on the provision of energy consumption information.

Gateway

The Meters and More ’s purpose is not only to provide an interoperable end-to-end solution for smart metering, but also to develop product extensions for value-added services.

To this end, our TCS Committee recently released the first prototype of its Smart Energy Gateway for communication between the smart meter and in-home devices.

This interface enables the interchange of energy consumption information in near real-time and the creation of new services based on the Meters and More protocoll. The Smart Energy Gateway is the key element of the Meters and More Beyond the Meter programme, which is aimed at accelerating the delivery of smart energy benefits for customers.

What about Gateway?

The Meters and More Gateway is a pioneer in versatility (multi frequency and multi mode PLC communication, flexible data model), standardization (open standard based), availability (implemented and tested by an international team), a first class device for direct communication to the smart meter

 What is its function?

The Meters and More Gateway is the user device that enables the customer to connect directly to the Smart Metering system through Power Line Comunication avoiding any further intermediate device.

The customer can receive all the information on his own real-time or historical energy consumption conveniently from home

What are Gateway advantages ?

The Meters and More Gateway enables the customer to receive energy consumption information to increase his consumption awareness. Furthermore it acts a direct connection with the DSO or Energy Service provider, enabling Value added Service like: demand side and demand response management, active demand and load shifiting, multi-tariff energy consumption and more.
